Does the viral crystal hair removal stone work and is it worth buying?

If you have sensitive skin, exfoliate no less than 48 hours before use. It may also be worth trying if you’re looking for a long-term, inexpensive and environmentally conscious alternative to shaving and waxing. Crystal hair erasers are handheld hair-removal devices that fit in your hand like a computer mouse. The top is smooth, while the bottom is a crystalline surface — which is a less-scary way to say etched glass.

How does a crystal hair remover work?

If you begin to experience any irritation or pain, stop using this stone immediately. People with sensitive skin may not be able to use a pumice stone. If you break the skin during this process, apply an antiseptic and discontinue use. Discuss other options with your doctor or dermatologist. In addition to removing dead skin, a pumice stone can also remove unwanted hair.

What Makes Bleame Special

Of course, like many of us, I was sceptical about it. Well, much to my surprise (and after trying it a few times), it’s safe to say that it did live up to my expectations. As an aesthetician, what’s Scarso’s preference for hair removal? Or laser hair removal — if your wallet can tolerate it. Both options will give you cleaner, longer-lasting results, with less etched glass. For example — while it’s not part of the standard pitch — Scarso suggests that crystal hair erasers could be a great introduction to shaving.

There are non-laser treatment options too, like Epilar which uses a gel-like substance to rid hair from its root. Browse Epilar salons and laser hair removal treatments in Los Angeles and book from $20. You should set aside around 25 minutes for a session at a top clinic nearby. You treat your hair, your face, and your eyes to a mask, but what about your legs? Just smooth the cream onto the area you want to treat, leave on for 5-10 minutes, and wipe off. Unfortunately, pumice stones are not useful for sensitive skin types. Some synthetic pumice stone manufacturers claim that the stones can work for sensitive skin.

Because of how the product fits in your hand, it may also be a good option if you don’t have the manual dexterity to hold a razor. The good news is that it's not a life-and-death matter if you do decide to try one out for curiosity's sake. If you find daily shaving under your arms causes irritation, this is a great alternative.

Bleame™ Crystal Hair Eraser is safe to use on knuckles, arms, legs, chest, back and bikini area. You do not have to fish around several places and online sites to find the stone. It is easily available in almost every nearby drugstore, general store, or cosmetic store. An easy availability facilitates the users to go and choose the size, type, and pore width of their requirement. “I think this would be a nice start for someone, maybe in their preteens, who’s afraid of using a razor,” she says.

Pumice Stone Hair Removal: How to Use, Benefits and Side Effects

They’re suitable for all skin types, apart from those with sensitivity or eczema. Using a pumice stone can be a bit risky and the method is not even compatible with every skin type. People use this method with expectations of achieving permanent results. However, there is no certainty or scientific evidence behind the duration of results or how it can help achieve permanent results. Since pumice stone has a rough nature and you need to rub it against your skin continuously, it can cause skin irritation. On top of this, if you are not applying the right pressure, skin irritation can lead to damage to healthy cells and bleeding.

But pumice stone is most commonly used as a mechanical skin exfoliator for removing dead skin. You can find lots of affordable natural or synthetic options. A razor blade is one of the simplest forms of hair removal and is suitable for all. Use it to remove unwanted hair from the armpits, legs and bikini line. Nowadays, it has also been a popular hair removal tool and there are claims that it can remove hair above the skin’s surface.

Take breaks between passes and use shorter strokes to minimize friction and heat. Let’s learn the step-by-step procedure of using pumice stone for hair removal. Overall, I understand the novelty of using the hair eraser. I have to admit that it really works but I’ll probably see myself using it to get rid of unwanted hair on areas like my legs and arms only, instead of using it on sensitive areas. Speaking of buying one out of curiosity, my roommate actually did that (before I could offer my warnings and advice as a Good Beauty Editor Friend should). "There was some light skin exfoliation but definitely not worth it. If anything, you're gonna irritate your skin with how much you're rubbing at it," she says.

The Bleame Crystal Hair Eraser first appeared all over TikTok last year, but interest around it is still going strong. That's why it's made its way to our list, for being the unmistakable viral hair removal stone all over our FYP. According to Bleame, it's 'guaranteed to remove unwanted hair,' 'exfoliates dead skin cells' and is a 'painless' method of hair removal. Reviewers said that it's fast, painless and easy to use, but irritation can be caused if you use too much pressure, so be careful. My skin felt really soft and there were also no razor bumps. However, since this is a form of depilation, it only removes hair from the surface of the skin, so it’s only best if you’re looking for a short-term solution.

I'm pretty sure she used it twice, and it has been sitting in our bathroom cabinet, unused, for many weeks since. If you're willing to go through five seconds of pain for smooth, hair-free legs for up to four weeks, then Veet has your back with the Veet Body And Legs Cold Wax Strips. Plus, you can buy them to stick on your boyfriend's leg hair. In Los Angeles, laser hair removal specialists charge an average of $70, but you should expect to pay anything from $20 and $200.

Rub the stone in a circular motion for about 15 seconds. If you notice any redness or feel any burning, stop using the pumice stone immediately. Your stone can hold bacteria, even if you clean it regularly, so it’s best to replace it once a month. You can find a pumice stone at your local pharmacy, department store, or even the personal care section at the grocery store. This system, in particular, has a lifetime’s worth of pulses—approximately 400,000—which means you never have to replace the cartridge, which makes the hefty price tag well worth it. When gently moved across the skin, galvanic energy is released to open the pores, allowing for more speedy removal.

What's Up With All These Crystal Hair Removers Popping Up on TikTok?

Of course, it’s also a more sustainable option as well because, unlike shavers, you can use this product over and over again. The hair eraser is different from your usual hair removal tools as it makes the hair clump and breaks from the surface. What’s more, it also prevents razor bumps and ingrown hairs by shaving right at the surface level of the skin. Unlike shaving and waxing, the hair erasing tool boasts a “painless” and fuss-free solution for hair removal.

Using the pumice stone

Ask your dermatologist for guidance on when it’ll be safe for you to have follow-up treatments. Laser hair removal can be very effective in keeping treated areas hair-free for months, or even years. Better still, when hair does regrow, it’s likely to be less noticeable. Maintenance treatments may be required to keep areas hair-free – check with your dermatologist. A pumice stone is a type of volcanic rock that forms when lava suddenly cools during an eruption.

Best For Legs

Be careful not to overexfoliate, or you may irritate your skin. When I first tried the crystal hair removal stone, I was curious to find out if it works on all lengths of body hair. Because crystal hair erasers effectively buff the hair off your skin, they exfoliate it, too. According to the advertisements, that means you can say goodbye to “strawberry legs,” ingrown hairs, skin irritation and razor burn — and hello to softer, smoother skin. If you want to avoid that, even using the best electric razors for women can give you... Wet or dry, this virtually painless epilator grabs onto even the shortest hairs that waxing and shaving miss.

To use a pumice stone on your face or neck, consider purchasing a double-sided stone. These instructions will help you to properly remove your rough skin. If you begin to experience pain or irregular symptoms, stop using the pumice stone immediately. We'll show you what's available at the 20 skin and body businesses near you.

Hence, it is recommended to use pumice stones on smaller areas only. Ingrown hair is formed as a result of the build-up of dead skin cells or the breaking of hair in between hair removal. To treat these, you can use pumice hair in gentle motions to exfoliate the skin and reduce the formation of ingrown hair. Of course, its idea has been replicated by many different companies now, so they all use this same revolutionary technology. The treatment for corns and calluses is to soak your skin in warm water and gently file it with a pumice stone to remove dead cells and refresh your skin. Moisturize the area and use padding to protect your skin, like a bandage or gloves.

Tips for using a pumice stone

After you use a pumice stone, always moisturize your skin and clean the stone. Remember that your results may not reflect those of someone else. Add it to your at-home pedicure or exfoliate your legs, arms, and torso. You’ll likely want to avoid a stone on sensitive areas like your face and if you have acne-prone, sensitive, or very dry skin. A pumice stone is a popular skin care tool often used for exfoliation.

Best Safety Razor

This handy shaver is designed to trim and shape unwanted pubic hair safely and easily. It’s ideal for anyone who wants a more affordable and less painful alternative to a bikini wax. As the razor’s name suggests, this is a great pick for those with sensitive skin but it can be used by all. It’s also ideal for those that suffer with strawberry skin after shaving as it can help to reduce bumps and irritation. If so, we found your new favorite razor, courtesy of Gillette.

It’s normally recommended that you shave the area you want treated the day before your appointment. Shaving the area helps to prevent thermal damage to your skin’s surface and means the laser will directly target the hair follicle. Be careful not to take off too much skin or cause an injury. Bacteria can get into these wounds and cause an infection.

As they are quite sharp, we’d suggest only using them if you’re confident in dermaplaning–testers say they can scratch if your technique isn’t on point. It kind of goes without saying, but they need to be kept well out of reach from children, too. This is suitable for anyone that wants to remove very fine, ‘peach fuzz’ hair on the face while also targeting aging signs. This can be used on all skin types but is not recommended for sensitive skin. A pumice stone is a volcanic rock that is formed when lava in an erupted rock cools down. This porous and rigorous stone is a mixture of lava and water that is usually used for skincare.

Adjust accordingly based on the tolerance of your skin. Crystal hair eraser advertisers have made some really big promises. In some cases — for some people — they deliver on them. (Rest assured, it’s clinically proven and FDA approved). If you're worried about giving up using retinoids on your skin, a more permanent method of hair removal means that it won't be an issue for you for too long. A pumice stone is mainly used as an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells from the body and bring out fresh cells to make skin smoother. Its rough and porous texture rubs against the body and removes all the debris and dead cells along with it. According to the manufacturers, if you lightly rub the crystal hair eraser on your skin in a circular motion, the hair will clump together and slough off.

How we chose the best products for dry hair

Although each product is effective on its own, you'll see the best results if you use the brand's No Frizz shampoo, conditioner and reviewer-loved Instant De-Frizzer styling spray in tandem. It works to replenish your head with hair while also targeting dandruff and other scalp issues like itchiness, returning your hair to full health. This formula will address irritation, excess oil, flakes, and more, making it a great product for daily use.

What Are Hair-Growth Products?

It includes flax protein to strengthen, loquat leaf to fight thinning, willow bark to gently exfoliate the scalp, and jojoba oil to moisturize. If you're wary of applying anything too harsh to your scalp, try this serum. Though the formula is 100 percent vegan, it has a triple shot of powerful botanicals that lift hair at the roots to give the appearance of mega volume, says trichologist David Adams. It also includes caffeine, a plant-based ingredient that works to naturally boost circulation in the scalp and build volume.

But these do take longer to work, as supplements “must first be metabolized by the body and dispersed by the bloodstream to be beneficial,” says Dr. Shaver. And oral supplements may have more systemic side effects and interactions with other medications, so it’s especially important to check with your doctor before taking a supplement. Also, consider avoiding formulations that contain additives that might irritating to the scalp and inadvertently cause dryness or itchiness, such as harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Instead, seek out those that have been dermatologist-tested, says Dr. Shaver. The highly nourishing and reparative No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo restores hair from everyday stresses, including split ends and seemingly uncontrollable frizz.

But that doesn't mean you should give up on moisturizing entirely; it's just a matter of finding the best product for your hair type. Fekkai's Full Blown Volume Conditioner is one of the few conditioners I've used that's able to hydrate my hair without leaving a greasy residue; not to mention, it actually adds volume. The lightweight formula is safe for color-and keratin-treated hair, and it leaves behind a fresh, floral scent that isn't overpowering. (Just remember to only apply it on the hair shaft, rather than at your roots.) My ends feel smoother without looking greasy, which, as I've mentioned, is an impressive feat.

While it won't entirely solve frizz caused by environmental factors such as rain or humidity, it'll make a serious difference if you're dealing with frizz caused by heat damage, bleach, and chemical treatments. Fans of Moroccanoil's famed original formula should flock to this gentle lather when struggling with fine, flat strands. Infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil, it gives your hair a weightless body without ever being rich enough to weigh it down.

If you stop and think about how many products you use to get ready in the morning, it might blow your mind. All of us feel a little overwhelmed sometimes, and it's nice to have support when times are rough. Hair fall is a common concern for many individuals, often leading to thinning and lifeless hair. Of those suffering from hair loss, over 800,000 will seek professional assistance to help reverse the trend. If you've ever run your brush through your hair, only to find clumps of it coming out with each stroke, then hair loss likely is a significant concern. This product should not be used if you are under care for high blood pressure, liver, thyroid, kidney, or psychiatric disorders or diseases, anxiety, depression, seizure disorder, herpes, or stroke.

Best Anti-Frizz Product for Fine Hair

Profollica is reasonably priced, contains all-natural ingredients, has no known side effects, and offers a 100% money-back guarantee. That said, the money-back guarantee is only for 60 days, and they say that it will take more than that to see results. If you give it another few weeks and still don't see results, it's past the refund policy. We think the guarantee-time should be longer and they should refund the shipping costs as well.

I use this hair primer all the time and love how fast it works to detangle and add shine. It also takes out the risk of fuzzy frizz that blow-drying is infamous for — and protects from the heat, too (again, we love multitasking!). If the full-size bottle price tag seems steep, the travel size is available at around half the cost (I use this size, and it lasts me quite a long time!). The brand formulated this pick using a six-oil blend that’s said to be suitable for all hair types, densities and textures. This is the best choice for fine hair that’s been subjected to a lot of styling products – dry-shampoo addicts, we're talking to you. Not only will it deeply cleanse overloaded roots, sweeping away every last trace of oil, grease and residue, but it’ll leave your lengths feeling noticeably swishier.

But the real standout ingredient in this budget-friendly shampoo is rice water. Researchers have discovered that rice water may improve hair elasticity — thus making it less prone to breakage. Additionally, inositol — one of its components —  can penetrate damaged hair, repairing and strengthening it from the inside out. This shampoo also features quinoa protein, which contains all nine essential amino acids. Studies have found when hair is lacking in these amino acids, the structure tends to suffer, leading to damage and breakage.

Reviewers love that it takes a natural approach, although it can take some time to see results without any potent actives at work. Sarah Maberry is a commerce writer at Hearst Magazines with over four years of experience researching and writing beauty content. She’s knowledgeable about all hair care categories, but is an expert when it comes to anti-frizz products, thanks to years of testing them on her own frizz-prone curly hair. Her product recommendations are based on personal testing, market research, ingredient safety and efficacy analysis, and interviews with experts and fellow Cosmopolitan editors. Fagiani says you shouldn't be shy about using products on wet hair because "frizzy wet hair will always become frizzy, dry hair." This is particularly true for curly hair types, as they're the most frizz-prone. Getting your wash day routine on lock is the first and most important step towards fighting frizz.

Apply it twice a day and within four months, you'll start to notice a difference, per brand directions. If you're really looking to invest, this FDA-cleared LED helmet is worth every penny. It's clinically proven via an independent study to promote growth more than topical products and supplements. It harnesses the power of LED light therapy to stimulate new hair growth, strengthen follicles, promote thickness, and extend the growth phase in the hair cycle. So yes, while it's a splurge, it offers real results that accelerate growth and reverse hair loss and thinning.

Using naturally-derived ingredients, Nutrafol targets these underlying issues to help keep the hair you have and potentially get back the hair you’ve lost. While Finasteride is effective, it’s usually found in a pill form and can carry some pretty serious side effects. There is some evidence that topical finasteride, however, can be effective with a lower risk of side effects, which is why this spray may come in handy for those who don’t want to take the risk. More than 80% of women experienced hair growth after using Rogaine compared to a placebo during a clinical study funded by the brand, so it’s worth a try. We appreciate that this kit comes with both FDA medications because research has shown that taking oral finasteride along with using topical minoxidil is one of the most effective ways to combat hair loss. Hair-growth devices can potentially work, but it'll take consistency and time to see results. Essentially, these devices work by creating a healthy environment for hair to grow, increasing circulation, and/or stimulate hair follicle activity. After seeing dozens of ads for this hair-growth device, I finally decided to try it about six months ago, and I'm slowly starting to notice results. It uses red light to help encourage some hair growth with once a day use across six to eight months.

According to the brand, the nourishing formula includes a blend of extra virgin coconut and shea oils. If you peruse this pick’s Google reviews, you’ll see it’s a hit with its curly hair buyers in particular, who say it helps keep frizz out of the picture. Similar to hair oils, anti-frizz serums, like this one from Morracanoil, are great for taming unwanted puffiness, flyaways, and static without adding excess bulk to your hair. Smooth a few drops throughout the bottom half of your hair while it's damp to help minimize frizz as it dries, then reapply as needed throughout the day to smooth things out and restore hydration.

While this hair mask won’t necessarily treat thinning hair, it mends split ends and makes your strands strong against future damage by deeply conditioning. The artichoke leaf extract protects the hair cuticle, which is the outermost layer of the hair. The hair cuticle is made of a protein called keratin, also known as the structural building block of your hair.

Which is why it's so important to talk to your dermatologist or a hair-loss specialist first, as your solution might be much simpler and cost-effective than a $$$ laser helmet. Similar to Rogaine’s foam product, this topical solution is sold separately in men and women’s versions. The women’s product, however, is less concentrated and contains just 2% minoxidil. You can expect to see results after 120 days of daily use, according to the brand. Friction-induced folliculitis might require nothing more than laying off the hairstyling practice that triggered it until you’re fully healed.

The tiny needles help reduce the risk of injury but we’d advise still being gentle. “It has patented LED technology that allows the necessary depth to reach the hair follicle (which is usually one of the challenges of LED),” she says, for starters. Furthermore, it pairs with your smartphone allowing you to set daily reminders, track your progress with photos, and more.

The good news is that there are plenty of treatments out there that are proven to work. We asked board-certified dermatologists–Natalie Kash, MD; Barry Goldman, MD; and Dhaval Bhanusali, MD–which of the best hair growth products for men are worth your time and effort–and tips on how to use them. “I had fully lost the corners of my hairline and within a few weeks started noticing healthier hair growth and much less hair loss. A hair growth product is a product that can be proven to grown new hair follicles, says Michelle Cleveland, celebrity hairstylist. The most common cause of hair loss, according to the AAD, is simply due to your genetic makeup, which can determine the amount of hair that you have.

However, a consistent routine incorporating the right ingredients and practices can help. Not doing so "can lead to buildup on the scalp and contribute to seborrheic dermatitis, which may lead to redness and inflammation," Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, told Allure. Connecticut-based board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, says that thinning hair can be linked to many things. Over time, this signals them to stop growing and then, months later, fall out simultaneously. "Shampoos formulated for hair loss should contain ingredients with anti-inflammatory and antioxidizing properties," says Han.

The 11 Best Heat Protectants of 2024, Tested By Southern Living

The paper was left unevenly burnt in areas where the product was applied, which left us wondering just how protected our hair was during heat styling. Still, we loved how smooth it left our hair, and we do think it’s a good option if your primary concern is styling. Hatcher recommends heat protectant sprays for fine hair and creams for medium to coarse hair. Selecting the right product for your hair type will ensure you’re protecting your hair without weighing it down. “I’ve had guests that have come in using a well-known heat protector that just wasn’t quite right for their hair type,” Hatcher says. Most of the products on our list are designed for all hair types, but contain ingredients for specialized purposes, like frizz or damage.

This colour-focused option uses pH-balancing formulas to strengthen and fortify hair, with a bold claim of leaving strands three times stronger. The shampoo does indeed deliver a thorough yet gentle clean and, once dried, hair is bestowed with impressive volume.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Oil Is a Heat-Styling Essential

Also, consider avoiding formulations that contain additives that might irritating to the scalp and inadvertently cause dryness or itchiness, such as harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Instead, seek out those that have been dermatologist-tested, says Dr. Shaver. While the Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil may be considered a splurge (over $50 USD) compared to drugstore alternatives, I believe it’s worth every penny.

We loved that it absorbs almost immediately into the hair, and it made our hair feel softer, more moisturized, and less frizzy even before we used hot tools. The product has a lightweight feel that leaves minimal tackiness on the hands; we noticed that it felt a little sticky as it absorbed, but it also left our hair feeling hydrated. It didn’t leave any residue, but we recommend sectioning off your hair to ensure an even application. When we compared the side of our hair with heat protectant to the side without, we noticed the protected side was noticeably smoother, shinier, and silkier. When we used hot tools, we didn’t notice any burning, sizzling, hissing, or smell of heat. We sprayed a paper receipt with the product, and there were no signs of burning after a quick pass with a flat iron.

Kérastase Résistance Ciment Thermique Blow Dry Primer

The trick is to start small, applying and working with one pump at a time. This elixir has a luxurious lightweight formula that effortlessly glides through my strands without leaving behind any greasy residue (great for oily hair). Fans of Moroccanoil's famed original formula should flock to this gentle lather when struggling with fine, flat strands.

Two to three weeks after color, shine and luminosity can begin to fade from the hair. Applying a pump of oil to color-treated hair, wet or dry, brings nourishing shine back to the hair, making it as glossy and gorgeous as it was the day you visited the salon. Similar to my twist outs, second day hair is always better than first day hair. The residue I mentioned having on my hands above disappeared when I ran my fingers through it, but the shine remained.

In fact, it’s so lightweight that it hardly felt like we had any product in our hair. One key ingredient includes beeswax, which Hatcher says creates memory and helps hold styling all day. The long-lasting floral scent was an added bonus, and it reminded us of salon-quality products and made us feel like we had just gotten our hair professionally done. Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime Hydrating Hair Oil Serum is a hair oil that checks every box for all hair types—including the curliest, coiliest strands.

We applied the spray directly on the hair, and it didn’t leave a sticky residue. Though the overall application was easy, we noticed that the product needs to be shaken well, and the pump can be tough to spray during the first few uses. Kerastase hair oil can be applied to either wet or dry hair, depending on your preference and desired results.

Available in both a liquid and solid formula, this volumising hair wash is a hero for limp and lacklustre hair. It's effective at removing oil and dirt, without compromising on the soft, glossy finish we expect from a high-end shampoo. Did we mention the classic shampoo is obtained with 100% clean energy, while its solid counterpart is completely carbon offset? A fantastic investment for anyone looking to go greener with their haircare.

Ahead, a dermatologist and a hairstylist share eight ways to strengthen your hair at home. We evaluated all products based on ease of application, absorption, efficacy, hair feel, and scent. We tested products in both our testing lab and over a two-week period at home to get a variety of insights. Living Proof's charcoal-based Triple Detox formula is the beauty team's unequivocal favourite. Most of us expose our hair to heat styling in some way, from diffusers to curling irons.

With that in mind, consider these the serums worth trying to achieve your unique hair goals. "High heat causes damage to the hair and the hair cuticle; however, realistically, it is not always practical to completely cut out heat styling," Ahram explains. "Since heat protectors do not block heat completely, try to keep hair styling tools at the lowest possible setting and try to avoid holding the heat in one spot for too long to minimize damage." She recommends Kérastase's Genesis Strengthening Shampoo ($42) for anyone experiencing breakage, thinning, or damage to their hair.

If your hair is dry but also short on body, a deeply nourishing shampoo can sometimes veer a bit too heavy. Pairing caffeine to stimulate root follicles and aloe leaf juice to hydrate and soothe ends, this lightweight formula aids with lacklustre locks struggling with volume and shine. That’s because factors like genetics, your nutrition, stress and anxiety, and changes in your hormones, metabolism, or medications can all contribute to thinning hair. And the cause of your hair loss can help you determine the right ingredients for you—and, with that, the best hair growth serum. Therefore, “the best guidance is to ask questions and rely on trusted sources for scientific evidence and advice that is tailored to your individual need,” she instructs.

Reviewing Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil

The most important step is to test your serum before using it for the first time. “Apply the serum to a small spot on the scalp for a few days to ensure that there is no irritation before applying it more broadly,” says Dr. Mirmirani. “A measured approach is best.” To that end, get comfortable with the fact that you’ll need to be both consistent and patient in your usage, as the results can take time.

Similarly, we noticed very little steam while styling with hot tools, and no sizzling or hissing. The Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original is a luxurious hair oil that offers frizz protection, heat protection, and provides strength, shine, and a long-lasting fresh fragrance. From color treatments to heat styling, a number of factors can lead to weakened, less-than-shiny hair. However, according to experts, there are many ways to address this dilemma.

Should you use heat protectant spray every day?

It was a reflex—I knew I didn’t need any additional product, but my ends are so dry that it's become a reflex to apply more product to it. After spritzing the leave-in onto my damp, I applied one pump of the Elixir Ultime to each section. Using oils to customize each stage of the ritual is what makes the experience unique and perfectly adapted to your hair. Your hairdresser will select the Elixir Ultime oil best suited for your hair and will adapt each step with the right dosage of the chosen oil. Hair is left lightweight, protected from heat-induced breakage and perfectly shiny.

Infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil, it gives your hair a weightless body without ever being rich enough to weigh it down. This one lends fine hair a touch of weightless nourishment, so you can use it on its own. However, add in the coordinating kaolin-infused conditioner and you'll really notice a boost in body.

Though it’s a more affordable pick, this spray created soft, smooth results similar to the high-end products on our list. What stood out during this experiment was my hair and rough ends felt more hydrated and smooth throughout the week after using this product, than it has after I used other heat-styling products. With other heat protectants, my hair usually feels crunchy after two or three days, and I’d have to put in a lot of work to flatten my ends. Finally, if you’re applying hair growth serum in the evening, consider your skin type—since certain ingredients, such as oils, can potentially rub off onto your pillow and be transferred to skin.

If you like your products to be on the natural side but still want them to deliver the goods, then Aveda's long-loved, volume-boosting shampoo is well worth a whirl. But finding the right formula isn't a matter of simply choosing a product off the shelf and hoping that it works. As someone who’s constantly on the lookout for quality hair care products, I recently decided to give the Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil a try. To experience all that precious oils have to offer, this ritual performed in 5 acts uses the media darling Elixir Ultime Oil to create a series of blends tailored to your hair. A relaxing massage and a custom oil zoning technique facilitate the penetration of the oil’s active ingredients for hair that is more resilient, softened and infused with natural shine.

Elixir Ultime

We love the Mizani Style Shifter Society Heat Screen, which is made specifically for curly hair types 4-8 to reduce frizz, soften hair, and increase shine. Just like other Olaplex products, this serum has the brand’s signature scent. When tested for efficacy with heat styling and the toast test, we did not notice any signs of heat damage. This gives us peace of mind in knowing that our hair will be fully protected while styling. Although Verb’s Glossy Shine Spray is designed for thick to coarse hair, anyone can benefit from its lightweight formula. The spray bottle allows for even application, and the product easily distributes through the hair.

It took about two minutes to fully absorb, but there was no noticeable film or residue left behind. There was some product transfer, but not more than you’d expect from a cream product. We loved the hydrating, lightweight formula and how it left our hair feeling soft, bouncy, and healthy. Although we noticed more shine in our hair, we did find that our hair looked slightly greasy after application, so keep that in mind if you have fine or oily hair. If you’re struggling with damaged hair, we recommend using this Kérastase product before using heat on your hair.

Science-y brand Virtue uses a human-identical form of keratin in its advanced formulas, meaning the hair recognises it and knows exactly how to put it to good use. This super-lightweight volumising shampoo leaves hair clean while swelling lacklustre strands, but it's the long-term nourishing benefits that make it really worthwhile. While many products do provide applicator nozzles that reach through the hair, some droppers aren’t as precise. "I do not recommend biotin as it has not been shown to help with hair growth and can alter your lab results, such as thyroid labs, leading to false diagnoses." "This will help prevent a type of hair loss called traction alopecia, which can happen from repetitive tight hairstyles."

If you feel like you’re constantly pumping mousses and dry shampoos into your roots, only for them to fall flat mere minutes later, you likely need to take a few steps back. The road to thick, full hair actually starts in the shower – specifically, with a specialist shampoo for fine hair. "Use a pretreatment or oil on the scalp before shampooing and massage the product using a scalp massager to stimulate blood circulation, promoting hair growth and healthy hair," she says. Shampooing is the first step in any hair care routine, and it's an important one. "Having a good hair care routine is key to having strong hair," Hurtado says.

This was a pleasant surprise, because other heat protectants I’ve used have made my hair feel dry and crunchy. Just like the serums in your skincare lineup, hair serums are known to target problem areas. The Olaplex N°.9 Bond Protector is meant to repair extremely dry and damaged hair. During our testing, we noticed significantly less breakage after styling than we usually do with non-protected hair.

After heat styling with a flat iron, our hair felt smooth and our dry ends felt revived. We’re huge fans of this lightweight yet hydrating formula from Living Proof. It gave our hair a bouncy and shiny finish without a greasy appearance, and it didn’t transfer when during and after styling.

The Best Hair Cream for Men in 2024 Top Hair Creams

If you have wavy or curly hair, you might want to avoid waxes as they can clump in your locks. Wax hair products offer a lot of hold and a lot of malleability, without the greasiness of petroleum-based products. “You can hit the waves, come out, run a comb through your hair, and boom! The downside of that durability is that it takes some effort to wash the product out. Just a few spritzes of this spray at the roots of your hair instantly pumps them up with crazy volume, even thin or fine hair.

This becomes even more true when you consider the sheer volume and variety of hair styling products available today. Most hair oils are a blend of nourishing ingredients (argan tend to play a prominent role) specifically targeted at the hair on your head. So avoid any oils that are solely targeted to beards, face, or body. If you’re going to grow your hair out, then get an oil, warm a few drops in your palms, and comb it through the strands every morning, especially targeting the ends.

CREAM

The versatile product works for just about any skin type and even helps reduce epidermal irritation. Cetaphil’s Daily Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer is a great entry point for those new to using a regular face cream. Along with UV-blocking SPF 35, it also uses edelweiss flower extract to help retain skin moisture. Pore-clearing salicylic acid and firming caffeine make Kiehl’s Age Defender Moisturizer another of Brauer’s favorites to recommend. Oil-rich linseed extract, to smooth rough skin and reduce fine lines, completes its skincare trifecta.

We also sifted through hundreds of customer reviews, choosing products that people rate highly and would likely buy again. Beyond nourishment, this conditioner aims to impart much-needed hydration to the hair without weighing it down. Detanglers contain ingredients that help lubricate the hairs in the knot or ingredients that temporarily shrink the hair shaft. When the follicles are lubricated, they can slip past each other more easily, making it easier to slip out of the knot. If the hair shrinks down a little, a similar effect occurs, and the hairs have more room to untangle.

Among hair spray's many attributes is that you can use it alone or in conjunction with other hair styling products, such as paste or pomade. But where hair spray really shines is as a finishing product to look your style in place. Hair balm is similar to curl cream for its ability to prevent curls from shrinking and for providing high doses of moisture to each strand.

Guys who have weighed in say that it makes their hair appear thicker and keep more hair right where it is. If a 2-in-1 product is your kind of thing, you have another great option in this anti-thinning formula from Thick Head. Its focus is on DHT, that pesky hormone that contributes to hair loss in men, minimizing its effects so you can stop worrying about hair loss. This shampoo cleans and conditions scalp and hair, leaving you with a healthy-looking mop of hair that will help you get your swagger back.

Perhaps you favor a more artfully disheveled hairstyle that needs a textured, piecey look? It could also be as simple as taming a cowlick or keeping your hair out of your face. In all those scenarios, a wax is going to do a much better job than pomade or any other hair product for that matter. For the past two years, we consulted with Men's Health's Grooming editors and writers on the top grooming products for men. Experts, including our Grooming Editor Garrett Munce, put a number of hair gels to the test and evaluated their effectiveness, scent, value, and usage for different types of hair as well as hairstyles.

Some also act as a conditioner by helping add moisture to the hair. Know this about fiber—it’s a no-nonsense styling product for men who don’t want their hair to budge even slightly during the day. With fiber, your hold remains locked in until you wash the fiber out.

“Varying strengths can leave your hair stood on end all day, while a lighter hold can be used to achieve the perfect quiff if applied pre-blowdry in damp hair," Jake confirms. They can smooth strands, tame strays, add a healthy amount of shine, prevent split ends, and many can even shield strands from heat and UV damage. Use it as a finishing product to prevent the ends of your hair from fraying upward and outward, or mix 1-2 drops into your styler of choice for a light-catching photo-ready finish. Contrary to popular belief, men’s hair products can get very complicated and overwhelming.

Ensure you run it all through your hair before you finish styling, as sometimes you can see traces of white from the cream if you don’t dispense it properly. If you want a styling cream that works on all hair types and lengths and smells divine, this is the buy for you. When styling your hair, what product to buy depends on your desired finish.

The photoshoot staple, wax is a stylist's go-to thanks to its formulation “betwixt wet and dry”. A marketer's way of saying that its product is texturising, salt spray is the thing to purchase should you want to look debonair and tousle. “Apply a couple of spritzes to damp hair, then one or two more to your hands and work it through,” says Jake. As with workman's tools, hair products are only as good as the person that wields them…and yet to the man who has truly mastered his product(s) of choice, the world of fantastic hair comes wide open.

Your choice of hair product will depend on a lot of factors, including the type of hair you have, the haircut you’re sporting, and personal preference. When I first started styling my hair with product, I was 12 years old and rocked a v-shaped bowl cut with a swoop of bangs in the front. Read on for our expert-vetted list of the best hair thickening products.

A moisturizing blend of jojoba oil, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and green tea deeply nourishes and protects the skin against free radical damage that can cause aging. Unlike some moisturizers with SPF, this one from Paula’s Choice won’t leave a gritty or sticky feeling on your face. Its matte finish also happens to be ideal for combination and oily skin types and contains colloidal oatmeal to calm irritation and redness. Double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Michael Bassiri-Tehrani often suggests this long-lasting hydrator from Clinique to clients in need. Hyaluronic acid fragments and activated aloe water go deep into the skin to replenish its moisture, while humectants ensure it stays put for up to 72 hours per wear. As a bonus, the cooling effect of its gel-cream formula feels extra nice post-shave.

It won’t give you quite as much texture as a salt spray, but sugar spray is a great option for anyone whose hair is too dry and brittle for salt. They give your hair flexibility and strength while providing a low hold that doesn’t have the stiffness or greasiness of wax and pomade. Striking the right balance between hold and moisturization is essential for curly hair and this deeply hydrating cream hits it out of the park. It leaves your hair smooth and healthy looking (and feeling) with just the right amount of hold to define both looser and tighter curls. Hairspray is the surefire way to keep your style in place, especially if you’ve opted for a lighter-weight product as your foundation. Rarely will you use hairspray on its own; instead, keep it around for especially hot or humid days, when the heat and sweat might otherwise compromise a style with a lot of volume.

This unique styling cream offers a high memory hold, meaning that your style looks the same late into the evening (or even the next day) and it did whenever you first styled it. It moisturizes, adds shine and creates easy separation with a flexible yet sturdy medium hold. "American Crew Forming Cream is versatile and works well with various hair types and lengths," says Andrew Zumbo, American Crew Ambassador and New York-based stylist. One of the advantages of having straight hair is that almost any styling product will work for you. However, straight hair may look a bit thin and flat, so it doesn’t hurt to choose a product that adds some volume. Pomades and gels give you a wet-look finish, while hair putty, clay, and wax provide a natural-looking matte finish with more volume.

For instance, if your hair tends to be dry, then “look for serums that contain oils to help hydrate the dry hair shaft,” says Dr. Shaver. Saw palmetto makes an appearance, cutting out DHT, and nettle minimizes thinning while supporting hair follicles. Amla, pumpkin seed oil, and green tea are other important hair growth ingredients, but the formula doesn’t start there! It’s full of helpful botanicals that users claim transforms their hair quickly. Since it’s safe on color-treated hair, you don’t have to worry if you’re trying to avoid grays and stop thinning at the same time.

Many of these use ingredients like polymers to thicken the hair shafts themselves or others like sea salt or powder to create texture within the hair to make it appear fuller. For DHT blocking, this shampoo contains capixl biochanin A, in the hopes of slowing hormonal hair loss. There are ingredients that fight dandruff, too, plus others that support a healthy hair growth cycle, prevent follicles from shrinking, boost blood circulation, and more. Clary sage cuts down on sebum production in the scalp so hair isn’t weighed down against your head, kigelia africana reduces inflammation, and ginkgo biloba blocks bacteria from preying upon your scalp. Baxter of California's styling gel is made with a paraben-free high-hold formula that works great on dry and damp hair. For a natural, more wavy look, you can run it through towel-dried hair and use a blow dryer to work it into place. The gel's perfect amount of hold, combined with versatility in use and pleasant scent, is what makes this product the top dog.

Göt2B Ultra Glued Invincible Styling Gel

Johnny B. Mode Styling Gel offers a versatile way to create a variety of hairstyles with maximum hold and shine. This alcohol-free, citrus-scented gel caters to men seeking a reliable styling product that provides control and a polished appearance. Heat protectants often come in the form of a spray, cream, or serum that is applied to dry or damp hair before styling. They coat the hairs and provide an extra layer to help protect the hair against the heat of whatever tool you’re using. Never blast your hair too long with the highest heat setting, and keep the blowdryer 3–6 inches away from your hair (unless you’re using a diffuser).

If you’re searching for a shampoo that goes beyond mere cleansing, the SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Shampoo is a strong choice. This product works to strengthen and revitalize your hair while helping improve its health and appearance. Once you’ve applied it, comb or brush your hair in a downward motion to get rid of any tangles.

Try these products for a healthy and styled hairdo

Do not, we repeat do not, try to take a pair of scissors or a bare razor to your ears. An ear hair trimmer will safely cut your ear hair while minimizing the risk of cutting yourself which could lead to infection, which is definitely not something you want in or around your ear. Make sure to apply it to your face and neck to reap its maximum skin barrier-strengthening benefits. This weightless gel-cream practically melts into the skin, which is just one of its many fine qualities. Its formula also contains aloe leaf juice, which comes in handy to soothe skin before and after you spend time in the sun. Plus, a pea-size amount is enough to cover both your face and neck.

If you’re looking for texture, hold, lift, a matte finish and a good smell, this paste-clay formula ticks all the boxes. First of all, we have to mention the packaging – it’s like one of those ‘fancy’ tubes of toothpaste where you press the lever and the product squeezes out slowly. It goes through hair smoothly and consistently and leaves you time to re-adjust your style before drying and leaving a natural, matte finish. There’s no need to re-apply during the day – your style happily stays put – and it washes out just as easily as it went in.

Below, we've rounded up our top picks for the best hair creams that work for a variety of hair types and concerns. From shampoos and conditioners tailored to your hair type to finishing products that bring your style to life, there’s an ideal product for your needs. And many options have natural or clinically proven ingredients too.

Users love how it only takes a small drop of product to create a thick lather, and how hair looks instantly abundant. For most of us when we think of hair gel we reflect back to our younger days when the product with the hardest hold became our styler of choice. Ultra Glued by Got2B is one of the strongest hair gels out there.

Generally providing a lighter hold than a clay or putty, fibre is good for casual, everyday texture. It provides reworkable styling with a medium-hold and low-shine. Given the nature of short hair, similar to straight hair, most styling products will work well here. For those lucky enough to have straight hair, there really is no restriction in terms of usable hair products. The biggest considerations will be the amount of hold and shine you require to suit your chosen look.

Once the hair gets long enough to comb, we suggest switching to paste or clay. Pomade may get most of the attention in the men’s hairstyling world, but there are plenty of reasons to use hair wax. You wake up with an especially extreme bed head and you need to wrangle your wig into place quickly, for instance. Or say you’re going to a wedding and you need your hair to stay locked in place all day.

You might also consider a mousse for definition, texture and a healthy-looking appearance. While pomades are great for adding hold and grit to a hairstyle, they tend to be overly drying. Baxter of California wisely took all the benefits of a pomade and combined it with the moisture-rich properties of a styling cream to create this 2-in-1 cream pomade. If you’re looking for a styling product, choose one that provides the level of hold and finish you desire.

Study Designs: A Complete Guide

types study design

When the category “foreign policy” was narrowed to a specific aspect – “the war on terrorism” – far more people chose it; only 33% chose domestic policy while 52% chose the war on terrorism. Surveyors may conduct pilot tests or focus groups in the early stages of questionnaire development in order to better understand how people think about an issue or comprehend a question. Pretesting a survey is an essential step in the questionnaire design process to evaluate how people respond to the overall questionnaire and specific questions, especially when questions are being introduced for the first time.

2 Three types of research designs

One of the main differences between a prospective cohort study and a randomized control trial is that instead of seeing the natural course of exposure (e.g., choice to smoke or not smoke), we instead randomly allocate participants into our study groups—we choose for them. This means we may give one group the standard of care for an ankle injury and give the other group a new cryotherapy plus standard of care to see the effect the cryotherapy has on the outcome of the injury. Observational study designs, also called epidemiologic study designs, are often retrospective and are used to assess potential causation in exposure-outcome relationships and therefore influence preventive methods. Observational study designs include ecological designs, cross sectional, case-control, case-crossover, retrospective and prospective cohorts.

OTHER RESEARCH METHODS

Because both exposure and outcome are assessed at the same time, temporality cannot be demonstrated, i.e. it cannot be demonstrated that the exposure preceded the disease (1–3,5,8). Point prevalence and period prevalence can be calculated in cross-sectional studies. Measures of risk for the exposure-outcome relationship that can be calculated in cross-sectional study design are odds ratio, prevalence odds ratio, prevalence ratio, and prevalence difference. Cross-sectional studies are relatively inexpensive and have data collected on an individual which allows for more complete control for confounding. Additionally, cross-sectional studies allow for multiple outcomes to be assessed simultaneously. In order to establish causality, it is important to be able to establish a temporal—or time—relationship between factors.

Types of Study Designs

In experimental studies, the researcher manipulates the exposure, that is he or she allocates subjects to the intervention or exposure group. Experimental studies, or randomised controlled trials (RCTs), are similar to experiments in other areas of science. That is, subjects are allocated to two or more groups to receive an intervention or exposure and then followed up under carefully controlled conditions. Such studies controlled trials, particularly if randomised and blinded, have the potential to control for most of the biases that can occur in scientific studies but whether this actually occurs depends on the quality of the study design and implementation. Some of the biases observed with cohort studies include selection bias and information bias.

Study designs: Part 1 – An overview and classification

On the other hand, qualitative studies can help researchers gain insights and generate testable hypotheses. They can be used parallel to quantitative studies to explore patients’ feelings, attitudes towards a new treatment, and personal tactics to cope with a disease. Assimilation effects occur when responses to two questions are more consistent or closer together because of their placement in the questionnaire. People were more likely to say that Republican leaders should work with Obama when the question was preceded by the one asking what Democratic leaders should do in working with Republican leaders (81% vs. 66%).

Table 1

The study design used to answer a particular research question depends on the nature of the question and the availability of resources. In this article, which is the first part of a series on "study designs," we provide an overview of research study designs and their classification. Primary research relies upon data gathered from original research expressly for that purpose (1,3,5). Secondary research focuses on single or multiple data sources that are not collected for a single research purpose (14,15).

Non-randomized trial study design

The relationship of an attribute to the disease is examined by comparing diseased and non-diseased persons with regard to the frequency or levels of the attribute in each group. Test-tube Lab Research "Test tube" experiments conducted in a controlled laboratory setting. This is a study in which 1) There are two groups, one treatment group and one control group. The treatment group receives the treatment under investigation, and the control group receives either no treatment (placebo) or standard treatment.

Institutional Review Board – Application Sample...

They will then develop closed-ended questions based off that pilot study that include the most common responses as answer choices. In this way, the questions may better reflect what the public is thinking, how they view a particular issue, or bring certain issues to light that the researchers may not have been aware of. Many surveyors want to track changes over time in people’s attitudes, opinions and behaviors.

Question wording

Also, since case-control studies do not begin with a population at risk, it is not possible to determine the true risk of outcome. Instead, one can only calculate the odds of association between exposure and outcome. Based on the direction of inquiry, study designs may be classified as forward-direction or backward-direction.

types study design

Reproducibility of Results - The statistical reproducibility of measurements (often in a clinical context), including the testing of instrumentation or techniques to obtain reproducible results. The concept includes reproducibility of physiological measurements, which may be used to develop rules to assess probability or prognosis, or response to a stimulus; reproducibility of occurrence of a condition; and reproducibility of experimental results. This compares a population with a certain medical condition with another group of people who do not have the disease but are otherwise similar to the study population. As an example, an ethnographer may study how different communities celebrate traditional festivals or how individuals from different generations interact with technology differently. This may involve a lengthy period of observation, combined with in-depth interviews to further explore specific areas of interest that emerge as a result of the observations that the researcher has made. Clinical trials are further divided into randomized clinical trial, non‐randomized clinical trial, cross‐over clinical trial and factorial clinical trial.

This short article gives a brief guide to the different study types and a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. Other studies (Yap et al. 2021) suggest that people on the autism spectrum are more likely to be 'picky eaters', which contributes to the differences in gut bacteria. Quasi-experiments are similar to true experiments (i.e., answer relational RQs) where treatments are allocated to groups that already exist (e.g., may be naturally occurring). Methodological studies, just like pilot studies, are also paramount in research. They are studies that aim to test if research methods are accurate and repeatable (Peat, 2011).

Of these, demonstrating temporality is the only mandatory criterion for suggesting temporality. Therefore, prospective studies that follow study participants forward through time, including prospective cohort studies and interventional studies, are best suited for suggesting causation. Additionally, causation between an exposure and an outcome cannot be proven by one study alone; multiple studies across different populations should be considered when making causation assessments (17). Interventional studies are often prospective and are specifically tailored to evaluate direct impacts of treatment or preventive measures on disease. Each study design has specific outcome measures that rely on the type and quality of data utilized. Additionally, each study design has potential limitations that are more severe and need to be addressed in the design phase of the study.

Just like other trials with a preference group, comprehensive cohort studies do not provide definitive information about the effectiveness and the efficacy of a treatment, but supplemental results. Therefore, a further independent randomized controlled trial will be needed to provide clear evidence and to answer generalizability goals. Just like with randomized trials, they involve the procedure of researchers allocating subjects randomly. However, the difference here is that subjects receive two or more treatments one after another; so, the randomization refers to the order patients receive each treatment (Peat, 2011). In other words, this design is a repeated measurements design, and subjects cross over treatments during the study. In comparison, in parallel studies subjects stay on the same treatment during the whole trial.

The animation below compares observational, quasi-experimental and true experimental designs. Definition 3.4 (Experiment) Experimental studies (or experiments) study relationships with an intervention. As such, case reports provide information about one patient or a small group of patients, and case series – about larger groups of patients.

The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. Random Allocation - A process involving chance used in therapeutic trials or other research endeavor for allocating experimental subjects, human or animal, between treatment and control groups, or among treatment groups. Logistic Models - Statistical models which describe the relationship between a qualitative dependent variable (that is, one which can take only certain discrete values, such as the presence or absence of a disease) and an independent variable.

A significant drawback to the PMR study design is that these studies are limited to death as an outcome (3,5,22). Additionally, the reliance on death records makes it difficult to control for individual confounding factors, variables that either conceal or falsely demonstrate associations between the exposure and outcome. An example of a confounder is tobacco use confounding the relationship between coffee intake and cardiovascular disease. If researchers ignore smoking they would inaccurately find a strong relationship between coffee use and cardiovascular disease, where some of the risk is actually due to smoking. Strengths of the study design include the well-defined outcome of death, the relative ease and low cost of obtaining data, and the uniformity of collection of these data across different geographical areas. Study design plays an important role in the quality, execution, and interpretation of biomedical and public health research (1–12).

What Is a Randomized Controlled Trial?

On top of that, while subjects in non-randomized trials are more willing to enroll, participants in the randomized trial who are receiving standard treatment after randomization may drop out due to dissatisfaction (Peat, 2011). As a result, selection bias may affect the generalizability of results in randomized trials. An example of a comprehensive cohort study with patient preference groups is the study conducted by Agertoft and Pedersen (1994). The research team aimed to measure the effects of long-term treatment with inhaled corticosteroids in kids with asthma. The parents of 216 children consented to take inhaled corticosteroids for 3-6 years, and the parents of 62 children preferred their kids to stay on cromoglicate. Results showed that experimental treatment resulted in reduced hospital admission rates.

On the other hand, retrospective cohort studies identify a population with and without the risk factor/exposure based on past records and then assess if they had developed the disease/outcome at the time of study. Thus, the study design for prospective and retrospective cohort studies are similar as we are comparing populations with and without exposure/risk factor to development of outcome/disease. Since the subjects are allocated to receive different interventions (new treatment, existing treatment, placebo, or no intervention) at random, randomized controlled trials reveal an outstanding advantage when compared to other study designs.

If you need more numbers to follow along, download the manuscript17 from PubMed. Remember that rounding differently and using the rates per 1000 athlete-exposures (aka, person-time) as opposed to incidence per total in the group results in differences in numbers during calculations. These four measures (NNH, NNT, ARR, and RRR) are very important in clinical medicine.[13] Figure 3.22 provides an example of how to calculate these statistics. Our final steps of an outbreak investigation are to continue refining our hypotheses, compiling more data to support or refute our hypotheses, controlling the outbreak, and performing surveillance to keep an eye on the problem. The cost of treating the problem, the cost of the intervention to fix the problem, and the existence of other alternatives all play into our decision about what to do.

In case-control studies, people suffering from a disease are compared to healthy people. Information about exposure factors is then collected and compared (Peat, 2011). Note that there are matched case-control studies in which vital personal characteristics between cases and controls match. Yet, the information can have greater generalizability, and selection bias is not an issue. In contrast, randomized trials have strict inclusion criteria, which may affect the generalizability of results.

Clinical trial

The sum of A and C gives us the total number of observations with the outcome and the sum of B and D gives us the total number of observations without the outcome. These consist either of collections of reports on the treatment of individual patients with the same condition, or of reports on a single patient. Keep in mind that when it comes to research, it’s important to manage your risks and play as conservatively as possible. If your entire project relies on you achieving a huge sample, having access to niche equipment or holding interviews with very difficult-to-reach participants, you’re creating risks that could kill your project.

It takes an inductive (bottom-up) approach, with a focus on letting the data “speak for itself”, without being influenced by preexisting theories or the researcher’s preconceptions. For example, if you wanted to measure if/how different types of fertiliser affect plant growth, you could set up several groups of plants, with each group receiving a different type of fertiliser, as well as one with no fertiliser at all. You could then measure how much each plant group grew (on average) over time and compare the results from the different groups to see which fertiliser was most effective.

Randomization

Unlike other research designs that are aimed at larger sample sizes, case studies offer a deep dive into the specific circumstances surrounding a person, group of people, event or phenomenon, generally within a bounded setting or context. This means that the researcher needs to assign participants to different groups or conditions in a way that each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to any group (note that this is not the same as random sampling). For example, withholding a potentially beneficial medical treatment from a control group may be considered unethical in certain situations. Figure 1 shows the tree of possible designs, branching into subgroups of study designs by whether the studies are descriptive or analytic and by whether the analytic studies are experimental or observational. In prospective studies, the outcome has not occurred at the time of initiation of the study. The researcher determines exposure and follows participants into the future to assess outcomes.

In graphic form, data of different trials can be plotted with the point estimate and 95% confidence interval for each study, presented on an individual line. A properly conducted systematic review presents the best available research evidence for a focused clinical question. The review team may obtain information, not available in the original reports, from the primary authors. The strength of a systematic review lies in the transparency of each phase and highlighting the merits of each decision made, while compiling information. Allocation concealment theoretically guarantees that the implementation of the randomization is free from bias. This is done by ensuring that the randomization scheme is concealed from all individuals involved (26–30).

Their research aims were to investigate the effectiveness of allergenic avoidance in the prevention of allergic symptoms in infancy. An example of a pragmatic study is the randomized trial designed by Laidlaw and colleagues (1998) to test the effectiveness of second eye cataract surgery, following the first eye. Questions regarding one’s visual difficulties along with visual tests were given to participants. However, let’s not forget that blinding is not always possible in practice, which can be one of the biggest limitations of all pragmatic studies. Often, to avoid drop-out rates, researchers can organize a run-in phase before randomization and give time for the subjects to decide if they want to participate or not.

In experimental studies, we do control factors and often use randomization to create fairly perfect conditions to see the influence of an exposure on an outcome. For example, we might enroll some cancer patients in a trial to see how a new medication works, or we might test how different the health is in communities with fluoridated water compared to those without fluoridated water. Randomization means that we use some sort of objective criteria to put study participants in whatever groups we establish for our study.

Controlling the problem might include vaccine development and distribution, it might be stopping access to a dangerous substance, or recalling food products. In figure 3.15, we see the diagnostic criteria for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare syndrome of excessive immune response. In order to be considered someone who has HLH, a person must have most but not all diagnostic criteria. However, sometimes not all patients will have all tests that are required to be considered a case. If they meet several criteria, they are instead what is known as a possible or probable case.
