The producers were initially worried that creating a film would have a negative effect on the series, as they did not have enough crew to focus their attention on both projects. As the series progressed, additional writers and animators were hired so that both the show and the film could be produced at the same time. Groening and Brooks invited Mike Scully and Al Jean to produce the film with them. The "strongest possible" writing team was assembled, with many of the writers from the show's early seasons being chosen. David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, George Meyer, John Swartzwelder, and Jon Vitti were selected. Ian Maxtone-Graham and Matt Selman would also join later, and Brooks, Groening, Scully, and Jean also wrote parts of the script.
Bart needs to use the restroom, and Lisa wants to see that no animals were harmed during filming, which she does. At the very end of the scrolling credits, the Squeaky-Voiced Teen cleans up the floor, not thinking two years in graphic filming school was really worth it. Gracie Films appear at the very end of it and the screen cuts to black.

The tape switches to their wedding scene where Homer sees them dancing (with the song "They Long to Be Close to You" playing in the background). At another point, it was briefly suggested to do an anthology-style Treehouse of Horror film, but such suggestion was never pursued. The project was officially green-lit by 20th Century Fox in 1997, and Groening and James L. Brooks were set to produce the film. Tie-in promotions were made with several companies to promote the film's release, including Burger King and 7-Eleven, the latter of which transformed selected stores into Kwik-E-Marts. The film premiered in Springfield, Vermont on July 21, 2007 and was released theatrically six days later on July 27 by 20th Century Fox across the United States. The film received praise for its humor, emotional weight, and callbacks to early seasons. The film was nominated for numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 65th Golden Globe Awards.
Inside, Krusty the Clown was filming a commercial for a new burger and had a live pig sitting on a table for it. After the shoot, Krusty ordered the pig to be slaughtered, but Homer stopped him and adopted the pig. If Krusty and his marketing team had decided against using a live pig or filmed in a different location, their path would not have crossed with Homer's. The father and son would have gone home after their meal and lived their day normally without the pig and without the infamous silo.

Marge believes Grampa's prediction, and decides to work out the meaning of the message. She encounters Colin, an Irish boy who shares the same passions as her. Homer gets a note from Marge of his chores, and one is fixing the sinkhole. While repairing the roof, Homer and Bart decide to have a dare contest.
Marge and the kids decide that they must save Springfield, but Homer refuses to help the town that tried to kill him. Later that night after returning home from the local bar, Eski-Moe's, Homer discovers a video tape left on the bed, which is a pre-recorded message from Marge telling him that they have left. She is so determined to save the town that she is prepared to end her life with Homer. Homer becomes frantic and starts looking for Marge, but falls asleep in the middle of the snow.
Samsung released a special Simpsons Movie phone, and Microsoft released a limited-edition Simpsons Xbox 360. Minnie Driver recorded the part of a patronizing grievance counsellor in a scene that was cut, as were Edward Norton, Isla Fisher and Erin Brockovich's scenes, and Kelsey Grammer's as Sideshow Bob. Marge, Lisa, Bart and Maggie are on a train heading from Alaska to Seattle to inform Springfield of the EPA's plan. Homer falls asleep and then enters a dreamworld, finding his epiphany and is slapped, punched and kicked by "epiphitrees". When they pull his body apart, Homer realizes that he cannot survive without others, and must save Springfield and his family.
The combination of Homer Simpson, his new pet pig, and a leaky silo full of excrement triggers a disaster that threatens not just Springfield but the entire world. While it is easy to say the main culprit is Homersince he dumped the silo in the lake, he is not alone in what caused the modification to the town. That mixed with the incompetence of the political leaders, the impatience of a young environmentalist and the avoidable death of band all led to the dome dropping on the town.
One idea was to have Milhouse act as Lisa's love interest, but the writers realized "the audience was not as familiar with long-standing crush on as thought". A car chase in which Homer throws flaming mummies out of a truck at the EPA was replaced with "more emotional and realistic" scenes at the motel and carnival that allowed for a change of pace. The scene of a naked Bart on his skateboard was Matt Groening's idea, who had always wanted to have Bart skateboarding naked, and Mike Scully had the idea of showing Bart's penis for two seconds. Storyboard artist Martin Archer was credited for devising the way to cover Bart's genitals with different things before they are exposed to the viewer. While the crew agreed that the gag would be funny, they wondered it if would mean an R-rating for the film, as they were happy with a PG-13 rating and that the gag was nonsexual and silly. They were ultimately able to get away with the joke because it wasn't live-action nor was it Homer's genitals.
